Copacabana Beach is one of the most popular beaches worldwide, and this is where they hold the most amazing New Year’s Eve parties every year. It doesn’t hurt that the average temperature at that time of year is in the middle 80s. Hang gliding, boating, and hiking are also favorites for both the locals and the visitors. Sports are also important here with the largest stadium in the world that holds up to 190,000 people. The place is packed every year for the World Cup. No matter what time of year you visit, you are sure to find something fun to do.

Rio de Janeiro is a special place to visit all year long. From the Rio Carnival in February to the New Year’s Eve party on December 31st, the city is packed with things to do. With 51 museums in Rio de Janeiro, you are not going to be able to see them all. But you can pick one or two that you can visit while you are in town. There are spectacular art galleries, fun children’s museums, and unique places like the Images of the Unconscious Museum with art from psychiatric patients. 

• Museum of Tomorrow: Just seeing the building should tell you how special this place is. The organic and eclectic structure has a long roof that sticks out over Praca Maua. This is the most unique science museum you will ever visit. Learn about the earth, cosmos, food, and enjoy more than 100 hands-on experiments. Take a look at the past, present, and future with exhibits and other information that will blow your mind. 
• National History Museum: Founded in 1922, this is one of the city’s oldest buildings with parts of it dating back to the 1600s. You will find over 285,000 items from the year 1500 to the present. See over 170,000 items like coins, stamps, and medals as well as armory, art, toys, and jewelry. Whether you are there to learn or just to get some great selfies, you will love this museum. 
• Indian Museum: Located on Rua das Palmeiras and built in 1953, the Indian Museum is managed by the National Indian Foundation and has over 14,000 artifacts and exhibits. There are also over 50,000 images and 500,000 historic documents with information about 19th-century Brazilian indigenous groups and politics. 

Shopping  

If you need some retail therapy or just want to buy some souvenirs for the people back home, you can hit the malls, department stores, or the open-air street markets. There are designer shops in Ipanema, flea markets in Saara, and malls in Centro.  

• Feira do Rio Antigo: Also known as Antique Market, you can find this bustling bazaar between Mem de Sae Avenue and Visconde do Avenue on Rua do Lavradio. There are typically over 400 stalls with a wide variety of wares from old furniture to antique jewelry. For everything old and Brazilian, you cannot beat this market-style antique fair. They even have live music and food on Saturdays. 
• Maria Oiticica: Handcrafted jewelry made from materials found in the Amazon are all the rage at this amazing boutique on Afranio de Melo Franco Avenue in Leblon Mall. For the most unique gifts made from tree bark, plant fibers, and seeds, Maria Oiticica is the place to go. She partners with indigenous Amazonian tribes for their raw materials to make jewelry as well as sandals and handbags.  
• Village Mall: At the Avenue of the Americas in the Barra da Tijuca, you can find this mall with over 100 stores, a theater, and some of the best restaurants in the city. The mall has many of the local brands, as well as the international name brands like Tiffany, Cartier, Gucci, Armani, and Louis Vuitton. You can get a bit of everything at the Village Mall. 

Dining 

Since you gotta eat, you may as well have some local Brazilian cuisine while you are in Rio de Janeiro, right? Of course, you can also find burgers, pizza, or tacos if you look hard enough. But here you can also find Amazonian, Churrascaria, Asian, Mediterranean, and Peruvian. Try something new. Be adventurous. 

• La Carioca Cevicheria: Have you ever tried Peruvian food? You are in for a treat at this cute little terrace eatery on Garcia d’Avila in Ipanema. Their specialty is ceviche, a fish cocktail cooked in lime juice with other spices. They also have lomo saltado (stir fried steak) fried octopus, and tiraditos (fresh sliced fish). Great food, cold beer, and Latin music all blend together to make the perfect eating experience. 
• Churrascaria Palace: If you are not sure what churrascaria food is, it is just traditional barbecue. But the restaurant itself is more than just a traditional restaurant. Located on Rodolfo Dantas in Copacabana, this fine dining establishment boasts cushioned and cozy seating, fancy tablecloths, and candles at each elegant table. They only use the finest cuts of meat, such as prime rib, lamb, and fresh seafood. 
• Ferro e Farinha: Just because you are thousands of miles from New York does not mean you cannot get some New York style pizza. In fact, the chef at Ferro e Farinha came from New York and made a name for himself serving up the best pizza in Brazil. You can get a traditional topping with sauce and cheese or take a chance on one of the more interesting choices like the Grana Padano, cheese with picante honey, or fermented bean and soy sauce.
