About Riga
Riga is the capital city of Latvia and home to a third of the country’s population. Best known for its distinct art nouveau architecture, the city received UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997. It is a move that aims to protect this unique architecture, the wooden buildings and the 13th century churches that are still in existence. Located on the Gulf of Riga at the point where the Daugava River runs into the Baltic Sea, the city was first founded as a port town in 1201.
The city is one of the largest trade hubs in the Baltic Sea region and has always been known for being a progressive city. Riga continues to adapt and play an active role in culture, science, art and education in the area. It is also somewhat of a tourist hub, seeing about 1.5 million visitors each year. People visit the city to observe the architecture, wander the streets of the charming Old Town and immerse themselves in culture through trips to the theatre or one of Riga’s museums.
